‘System Update – Rebooting Our Future’ Film Screening

In collaboration with Perins School, New Leaf Alresford are hosting a screening of the film ‘System Update – Rebooting Our Future’ on Thursday 15th January. Join us to watch a bold new feature length documentary about climate change, exploring how we can transform our politics, economics and society to meet the climate crisis.

In an era of accelerating climate change and cascading impacts, System Update offers a vital look at how transformative shifts in politics, economics, and society can protect people from climate catastrophe. The film calls for a reboot of outdated systems that have failed to respond to the climate crisis.

Producers Paul Maple and Professor James Dyke from the Global Systems Institute, University of Exeter, bring together world-leading experts and change-makers to explain why these systemic changes are critical, and how they can be achieved. The film is more than an informative piece; it’s a rallying cry for a better future – one in which the majority of people are united in calling for the changes needed to avert disaster.

“We are on course for utterly catastrophic climate disaster within the lifetimes of younger generations,” warns Professor Jason Hickel, who argues for a radical departure from today’s economic thinking in the film. This is contrasted with political leaders betting on untested technologies to reverse carbon emissions at some point in the future. System Update presents the reality: the time for action is now.

The film explores how past social movements, such as the suffragettes and the civil rights movement, have paved the way for monumental change, and shows how the same spirit can drive climate action today.

International climate lawyer Farhana Yamin joins the film to explain how people’s movements bring about social change, while climate campaigner Manda Brookman reminds viewers that “governments have to do what people want.” Max Wakefield, of climate action charity Possible, emphasises that change is possible at all levels – personal, social, and political.

Changing ‘The System’ is daunting, but it is what we must do now. System Update offers insights into how this can be achieved, making complex issues understandable and accessible to all. Three years in the making, this film is completely non-profit and free to watch. The solutions exist. For this to become reality it’s vital everyone join in this movement for change.

The film will be followed by a question and answer session with our panel, including the film’s producer and director Paul Maple; local MP Danny Chambers; Simon James, retired Investment Manager; and Ian Williams, Professor of Applied Environmental Science at the University of Southampton.

The film will be shown using the new state of the art projection equipment in the Perins’ Main Hall. Doors open at 6.30pm, the screening will start at 7pm, and the panel discussion will continue until 9pm.

Tickets are just £3 for adults (under 18s go free!) and can be booked here:
