UK Seasonal Calendar
Fresh food grown in the UK has a lower carbon footprint than food that has travelled further. We have got used to a huge range of fresh foods being available much of the year round but this relies on food being imported with much of it flown in. By familiarizing ourselves with the UK’s growing seasons you can choose the best fresh foods to eat for the time of year.
For the lowest carbon footprint food, choose the food ‘In Season’ shown in green.
Food that has been grown in polytunnels or stored will have a slightly higher carbon footprint and is shown in amber.
Avoid eating foods ‘Not in Season’ shown in red as these will almost certainly have travelled the furthest and have the highest carbon footprint.
